In the first Student Government Association meeting of the semester, senators heard about upcoming events and voted on an internal proposal.
Vice president of administrative services Olivia Romo shared elections updates, including the application due date of Jan. 18 and the SGA elections chapel on Feb. 14. Romo also shared how the Student Missionary Union will concurrently have a presidential election after previously having a selection process last year due to constitutional discrepancies.
Senators also shared President’s Administrative Council updates, such as an upcoming athletics survey, Student Development’s desire to host a resource fair and the basic needs committee researching food pantries in the area.
The executive board shared updates, including vice president of diversity and inclusion Leilani Bañuelos about a Martin Luther King Jr. chapel on Jan. 16. The chapel will be in Sutherland Hall from 12 to 12:30 p.m., with a lunch on Metzger Lawn to follow. Bañuelos also noted that the Caf will remain closed from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 16. Vice president of community relations Lauren Peterson then discussed the SGA scholarship opening. Students can apply for a $1,000 scholarship until March 5. SGA also needs two students to help review scholarship applications.
PROPOSALS
Peterson proposed for $180 to fund scholarships for the Celebration of Scholarship and Research. Three undergraduate students would receive scholarships of $60 to pay for materials required for presenting at the event.
VOTING
After voting to have a same day vote on Peterson’s proposal, the scholarships were passed in the full amount with a vote of 9-0-2.
