A victory over The Master’s college last Saturday would have capped Biola’s season with their second GSAC title of all time. Unfortunately for the Eagles, they end their regular season with a loss bringing their final record to 12-3-1 with a GSAC mark of 7-2-1.

Despite the loss, Biola players, coaches, and fans are all equally excited about the Eagles’ opportunity as they enter the playoffs ranked 3rd in the GSAC. Even though Biola has already clinched a playoff berth, a victory over the Mustangs would have clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

The first half saw most of the action as the Mustangs got on the board in the 12th minute on an own goal by the Biola defense. As the Mustangs were peppering the net early and often, a Biola defender tried to clear the ball, but his header inadvertently found Biola’s net and the Mustangs scored the first goal of the game via an own goal.

12 minutes later, Marlon Lindo won a scramble in the box and shot it past keeper, Aaron Fenlason to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead just 25 minutes into the match.

Biola responded 14 minutes later when sophomore midfielder, Marco Ruvlacaba scored his 11th goal of the season. Tony Montalvo recorded the assist and Biola went into the half down 2-1.

The Eagles never found the equalizer in the final 45 minutes of play. Even though they only had four shots on goal in the second half, they had more opportunities than the statistics show. Mustangs keeper, Kevin Lawson made two superb saves late in the second half to seal the victory and the GSAC title for Master’s. Meanwhile, Fenlason ended the day with seven saves.

The Eagles now look ahead to post season as they try to get past #6 Vanguard University in the first round. The Eagles defeated Vanguard 2-1 on the 28th in double overtime. Biola’s first game against Vanguard (11/4/09) will be at home. The next two games will take place on 11/7/09 and then the final game will take place on 11/14 at a location TBD.
