Wind, tough courses defeat Biola golf

Men’s and women’s golf teams struggle at their respective invitationals.
Men

The Biola men’s golf team took the course this past Monday and Tuesday for the Mustang Invitational at Masters College for another regular season match.

Battling high winds, the men struggled and placed 7th out of 12 teams.

“We have a lot of potential and we know what we’re capable of and this wasn’t it,” said freshman Jordan Swanson. “We’ll work hard to prepare for another tough field at the Holy Names University Invite in a couple of weeks.”

Swanson tied for 23rd on the day, placing as Biola’s top golfer. He was followed by freshman Joshua Mathis placing in a tie at 26th and John Graham landing at 36th.

“We struggled through all three rounds and no one is happy with how we played,” Swanson added.

Swanson was the only Biola golfer to post two scores under 80 at 75 and 76.

However the team is anticipating a solid fall season as they look to rebound in the near future.

“We have really high expectations for the team this year,” Graham said. “I expect a lot from this group of guys. We have a lot of talent and should turn some heads this year.”

Sonoma State University took first as a team, with Holy Names University and California Baptist rounding out the top three.

Women

The Biola women’s golf team had a disappointing day at the Golf Mart Lady Otter Invite this past week.

They failed to place in the Top 10 and received a “Did Not Finish” ranking. Reasons were not available at time of press.

Sophomore Jennifer Kent finished at a humble number 55, while Biola’s next best score was in the hands of freshman Rose Krison, who finished at 63. Sophomore teammate Michaela Mendiola finished right behind her at 64.

Biola’s top golfer, sophomore Whitney Hobbs, did not finish the tournament, as evident in Biola’s team score.

Although explanation was not available at time of press, Hobbs was able to give encouragement to the season in an previous interview.

“I would like to see the team improve in their games as well as have fun with it,” Hobbs said. “I have high expectations for myself, but for the team I want the girls to have fun and enjoy themselves. There is a lot to learn, and some of the courses are definitely not the easiest, so this will be a learning year with high hopes to the spring.”
