Marlon King’s running lay-up with six seconds left lifted Biola to a 45-41 win over California Baptist in a GSAC must-win game for both teams on Saturday night at Van Dyne Gymnasium in Riverside.
With this win Biola improves to 21-8 on the season and secures fourth place and home court advantage in the first round game of the GSAC playoffs.
From a spectator’s perspective, this game was not pretty by any means; Biola shot 38 percent from the field, and Cal Baptist shot an awful 29 percent from the floor.
King had 11 points for the Eagles and also added five assists and seven rebounds. Rocky Hampton posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards and also had three blocked shots. Hampton is the leading shot blocker in the GSAC this season with 67 blocks.
The 41 points scored by the Lancers were the fewest by a Biola opponent this year, matching the 41 points put up by Hope International when the Eagles played in Fullerton in early February. Biola, which is allowing an NAIA-low 56.5 points against, is 18-2 on the season when holding the opposition to 60 points or fewer.
This was a seesaw game the whole way through, but Biola hit clutch shots down the stretch. Thanks to King’s lay-up and Danny Campbell’s game-clinching free throws, Biola held on for the win.
