At the AS Senate’s weekly Tuesday meetings, senators give audience to parties requesting money, vote on pending proposals and discuss finances. Here is an outlined summary of the most recent senate meeting, which was held Dec. 2.

New Proposals:

– Christopher Hitchens, a prominent atheist who has been on the New York Times Best Seller List for authors, on MSNBC will be coming for a debate at Biola. Hugh Hewitt, who was an aid to President Reagan, will moderate for free. Possible candidates for the debate against Hitchens are John Mark Reynolds, who heads up Torrey Honors Institute, Biola professor Bill Craig or Frances Beckwith.

  • AS estimates that they will make from $7,000 to $10,500
    in revenue from the event.
  • The debate will be paid for by a reallocation of funds
from the spring concert – $15,000 for entertainment for
the concert will be used instead for the debate. It is
proposed to use $5,000 for the down-payment this
semester, and replenish the funds next semester.
  • The spring concert will be replaced with the debate.
  • It is being considered because AS already is bringing in
Thrice and renting out a good venue this fall, which
they will open up to the public if the students do not
    buy all the tickets.
  • The debate would be held in Chase Gymnasium or
Sutherland Auditorium. AS does not plan to spend more
    than $17,000 on the debate.
  • Tickets for the debate will be between $10 and $15, and it will be open to non-Biola students.
  • Money that has been saved from the difference between the concert and the debate will be put in the AS contingency fund.

-Welcome Back Fiesta

  • It will be for all commuters.
  • They are asking for $120.
  • The event will be the first week of school next semester.

1. Computer Lock Proposal

  • For AS offices there will be new locks for their computers.
  • It was passed for $325.
