Torrey Memorial Bible Conference finished strong Friday morning with a word from Mike Erre, teaching pastor of RockHarbor church, on sex and its effects on the soul. The closing session alternated worship songs with prayer and reflection on what had been heard that week.
The second day of Torrey Memorial Bible Conference, Thursday, concluded after a wide array of heated topics were discussed, among them the Christian response to homosexuality and emotional chastity.
But it wasn’t only the topics that were heated. The heat wave continued to affect La Mirada, reaching a high of 99 degrees once again according to AccuWeather.com, but fortunately cooling off earlier in the afternoon.
As some students completed their four required “physically present” sessions, Chase Gymnasium wasn’t quite as full on the second day of conferences, however the heat was no less stifling.
John Coe, director of the Institute of Spiritual Formation at Talbot School of Theology, started off the morning with the topic of emotional chastity. Coe encouraged students to abstain from dating until they were ready to think about marriage and refrain from becoming emotionally involved with someone if marriage wasn’t in the picture.
Becky Tirabassi, founder of Burning Hearts Inc., returned for the second session of the day, motivating students to get connected with God and change the world for Christ. Almost all of the conference attendees in the gym rose in response to a 21-day challenge from Tirabassi to spend an hour with God every day.
Dave White, senior pastor of NorthPark Community Church in Valencia, also returned for the second day in the afternoon session. White spoke on the topic of “dateology” aka “hitchology,” giving students tips on how to date intelligently.
Mike Haley spoke for the second time in the evening session, giving practical advice on how the Christian community should interact with the homosexual community. He listed traits that can be considered signs of gender identity disorder in young children or teenagers, and gave his conclusion on the scientific debate over the homosexual gene. In the question-and-answer time following his talk, Haley addressed how to interact with homosexuals or potential homosexual children in different professions, such as within the church or schools.
