Proposals for a new sound system and more bike racks on campus are among the issues the Associated Students senate has taken up this month.
Recently, the Chapel Board proposed the addition of a portable PA sound system for $650. The Yamaha StagePas 300 would be used for band practice during chapel rotations. The proposal passed in full at Tuesday’s senate meeting.
One top priority for AS has been food service. Alpha West Senator Jenna Plumb said there are going to be a lot of Caf changes in the near future and that AS is taking a lot of student feedback to Bon Appétit, the company that provides Biola’s food service. She said Bon Appétit staff are “very receptive” when receiving suggestions and complaints, and already there have been numerous changes as a result of AS suggestions.
Another hot topic in AS senate meetings has been the shortage of bike racks. Central locations, especially the Caf, need additional spaces for bikes, Plumb said.
“We’re working a lot right now on … seeing about getting those in,” she said.
Library hours also continue to be a topic of discussion, said Cami Cress, AS senior vice president. Recently, students suggested that the hours be extended, especially on Sunday afternoons. AS will also be funding Alpha Chi’s annual Candyland, a trick-or-treat-themed event for children on Halloween. The senate approved a $1,450 budget for the event on its Oct. 7 meeting.
“What’s cool about Candyland is it’s totally funded by AS,” said Plumb. AS also granted the money for a showing of the film “Voice of a Mountain,” a story about life after the Guatemalan civil war. The movie will play at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Hope Amphitheater. One of the filmmakers, Michael Field, will be present to answer students’ questions.
The primary goal of AS this semester is to ensure that “all students feel heard by AS and administration,” Cress said.
