Men’s soccer kicked off league play this week as they took on GSAC opponents The Master’s College and Vanguard University. Unfortunately, the team did not begin league as well as they would have liked, tying the first game with Master’s and losing by a single goal to Vanguard.

On Saturday’s home opener, Biola failed to build on sophomore Jake Ravenscraft’s lone goal. Master’s struck back nearly 20 minutes later to tie the game. Neither team would score again as they headed into double overtime and the game was ruled a tie.

Both teams had opportunities to expand their leads such as the Mustangs’ near breakaway in the second overtime which was squelched by senior Eagle defender Brandon Gonzalez. Biola also had another close goal when Ravenscraft almost recorded his second goal of the night on a corner kick that was directed to him but found its way just past the corner of the opponent’s goal.

After the disappointing tie at home, the Eagles traveled to Costa Mesa Tuesday to take on Vanguard. It was another rough day as they came up just short, losing by a single goal and suffering their second shut-out of the season.

Vanguard’s single goal came in the first half and proved enough for a Lions win. Biola’s Kennedy Chongo and Tony Montalovo both had two shots on a goal which barely missed but put an exclamation mark on the Eagles’ rough day.

The loss and tie give Biola a 5-2-1 record overall and 0-1-1 in conference play as the team looks for their first win in conference in a home game on Saturday against Point Loma Nazarene.
