Experimental cuisine in the Caf

I think our cafeteria is amazing. The food is always prepared well, arranged attractively and there’s a good variety of entrées. I say to my friends, “I don’t understand why people don’t like the food here. I think it’s great!” My friends glance at their standardized platefuls of ham, mashed potatoes and squash yet again and say, “Kyle, most people don’t eat the way you eat.”

I think our cafeteria is amazing. The food is always prepared well, arranged attractively and there’s a good variety of entrées.

If you do all your own shopping, you probably don’t get as much variety as we get at the Caf, and I say that from experience. I bought my own food over the summer, and no, man can’t live on bread alone, but bread and peanut butter will keep you going for a few weeks. Let’s just say I’m glad to have the Caf back.

Some students, however, seem bored with the Caf’s options. This confuses me.

I say to my friends, “I don’t understand why people don’t like the food here. I think it’s great!” My friends glance at their standardized platefuls of ham, mashed potatoes and squash yet again and say, “Kyle, most people don’t eat the way you eat.”

This might be part of the problem.

When people eat, there are a lot of things they don’t do. I’ve learned this the hard, awkward way. I didn’t know that most people don’t put mustard on their salad or dip their broccoli in steak sauce. They don’t get the lentils from the Garden station and mix them with the beans from Home Cooking on a handful of french fries with salsa. They don’t crush their tacos into paste and smother them with garbanzo beans.

I could go on, but you understand. This is the way I eat. I never have the same thing twice, and I rarely eat something just the way it’s served straight from a station. If you’re a stickler for burgers and fries at every meal, listen up. There’s a lot of food in our Caf, and you might as well have it your way.

Get the chicken calzone from the Pizzeria, but don’t just eat it as it is.

Try this: cut up the calzone and put it in a scarlet bowl. Add crumbled saltines and black beans from the salad bar along with some shredded spinach, cheese and salsa. Bam! You’ve created an entirely unique entrée in under three minutes.

And that was just a calzone to start with. Imagine what you could do with a burger. Or any of the other five trays of stuff they have at Home Cooking.

See what I’m getting at? It’s simple, it’s creative, and it’s fun!

Someday you’ll be lying on your deathbed asking, “Why didn’t I mix my grilled turkey with garbanzo beans, pesto sauce, and rice? Why didn’t I cut up a few hard-boiled eggs and wrap them in a tortilla with cheese and mustard and have a deviled egg roll? Why, oh why?”

You have one life to live and there is so much food in our cafeteria. Maybe it’s not laid out like you’re used to and maybe it’s not what you grew up with. That’s okay. Try stuff out. What’s the worst that could happen?
