Campus Safety was inundated with calls from concerned parents after a high-speed chase ended in the neighborhood of Biola-owned apartments.

The incident began with a high-speed chase in Buena Park and ended at 9:10 a.m. at Trinity Reformed Baptist church, located between undergrad apartments and graduate housing on Rosecrans Blvd. One suspect was apprehended immediately after exiting the vehicle and a second fired shots at Buena Park police officers before fleeing the scene. He was caught shortly thereafter, around 9:30 a.m.

Campus Safety first learned of the incident when a helicopter flew overhead, then responded by sending two officers to the scene and informing resident coordinators (RCs) at the apartments about the suspect at large.

The incident was the first in which the 3N notification system was used to communicate with students in the area. A text message was sent to all residents in the apartment complex, reading: “Police are searching for an armed suspect near the Rosecrans Apts. Area. Please stay inside with your doors locked.”

Later, residents received a follow-up message reading: “Suspect that was at large near the Rosecrans Apts. is now in police custody.”

“We went over to the scene to ensure our students’ safety and make sure they weren’t in harm’s way,” said Campus Safety Deputy Chief John Ojeisekhoba, who personally went to the crime scene to communicate with the sheriff’s department and the 30-35 patrol units that responded to the crime.
