Grey’s Anatomy” returns with season 13, which premiered on Sept. 22. All the Grey’s fanatics have counted down the days for this moment and it has come back better than ever.

a beautiful day to save lives

As former character Derek Shepherd would say, “It’s a beautiful day to save lives,” which held truth in the episode. Shonda Rhimes, writer of the series, never disappoints in leaving the audience in astonishment when adding twists and melodrama to the series. Shonda Rhimes’ fame has escalated over the years due to her amazing creativity and uniqueness.

Although she also wrote “How to Get Away with Murder” and “Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy” has garnered her the most attention. These three shows have no correlation with each other but they share a unique ability to hook audiences and keep their attention. Her knack for securing audiences manifests right away in this premiere, which picks up where the show left off in the previous season. The episode begins happily with Owen and Amelia’s wedding, but escalates to overwhelming emotional proportions.

Dr. Alex Karev, played by Justin Chambers, beats intern Andrew Deluca half to death after discovering Deluca in bed with his girlfriend Jo. In the previous season, the audience learned that Deluca was just trying to help Jo after she unknowingly revealed her dark secret of being married. Rhimes keeps the audience wanting more by letting the audience understand Karev’s fault in his actions.

As with each previous episode, the audience receives a message at the beginning and end. In this case she started with, “Don’t you wish you could just take it back? That thing you said, that thing you’ve done?” This message gives the audience a glimpse of what will happen throughout the season. In a world where friends, family and lovers work together, scandal will inevitably escalate. Hearts will be broken, tension will rise and trust will be questioned.

A visual flair

Director Kevin Mckidd provides visual flair to Rhimes’ story by finding middle ground between drama and realism. Mckidd showed the audience his expertise when it came time to save intern Deluca’s life though surgery. Mckidd showed vividly graphic scenes. Mckidd did his homework, showing how hospitals worked with scan rooms, medical terminology and equipment. Mckidd turned Rhimes’ script from well-constructed to truly superior.

Anticipation builds when Meredith Grey, Karev’s best friend, discovers what Karev has done and becomes torn between friendship and her job. Families begin breaking apart when lovers and siblings begin to lie to each other so that they do not test their loyalty towards Karev. Many secrets, lies and heart breaking choices already loom for the coming season and it only just begun. The episode ends on this note: “The past is written; there is no changing it. What’s done is done, but the future is ours to choose, for better or for worse.”

“Grey’s Anatomy” will continue every Thursday at 7 p.m. on Freeform with ratings looking healthier than ever and continuing its growth with over 8 million viewers as Rhimes’ skill as a writer also grows with the complexity of her output.
