Maintaining the winning trend they started in 2015, the reigning Golden State Athletic Conference champion, Biola women’s soccer team, started off the new season with a colossal victory over the Marymount College Mariners. Young and old alike had a piece of the action as junior forward Samantha Verduzco and a trio of freshmen provided the offense for Biola’s 6-0 season opening victory.

For nearly the first 20 minutes, the scoreboard remained blank until Verduzco scored her first goal of the game at 18:07. Before the end of the first period, freshmen forwards Paula-Marie Labate and Sarah Jeffries padded the Eagles’ lead to 3-0. After Verduzco scored her second goal of the game early into the second half, Jeffries locked in her first collegiate multi-goal game at 56:20. Freshman forward Annmarie Alvarez’s shot at 74:00 marked Biola’s final goal of the game as the Eagles beat Marymount.

Similar to last season, the Eagles showed relentless pressure on their opponent, scoring three goals with at least eight shots per period. With her two goals, Verduzco is well on her way to achieve similar numbers as she did in 2015, when she scored six goals and three assists.

The Eagles return to Biola for their home opener on Sept. 3 at 4:30 p.m. against the Claremont-Mudds-Scripps College Athenas.
