The men’s soccer team earned a crucial win over William Jessup University on Oct. 8. This was a must-win for the Eagles as they compete for the top of the Golden State Athletic Conference and the Warriors sit at the bottom of the conference with an 0-3 record against other GSAC teams.

Senior forward Stephen Tanquary put the Eagles on the board early with a goal off of an assist from junior forward Leonardo Contreras. This marked Tanquary’s first goal of the season due to injury-related limited field time.

William Jessup answered Biola’s lone goal less than two minutes after it was scored. The Warriors drove up the field and crossed a ball for a header in the middle of the box.

Biola kept attacking and managed to score two more goals before half. The second goal came off of another assist from Contreras, this time to senior midfielder John Hanscom. Contreras attacked the box and kicked the ball back out to Hanscom, resulting in a perfectly placed kick in the top right corner of the net.

After feeding two of his teammates, Contreras was able to claim a goal for himself. With twelve minutes left in the first half, freshman defender Kousei Mattox booted a free kick towards the goal, which Contreras redirected with a header. Biola entered the half with a 3-1 lead.

Five minutes into the second half, Hanscom earned his second goal of the game and the season. Sophomore Keaton Kerr sent a low cross that Hanscom buried into the back of the net. The Eagles beat the Warriors with a final score of 4-1.

Senior goalkeeper JT Addington saved three goals that night, only letting pass one, slightly reducing his season save percentage to .769.

The Eagles currently rank second in GSAC behind Vanguard University. They look to close the gap between themselves and the Lions as they play Menlo College at home on Oct. 10 for the second-to-last home game of the regular season.
