Coming off of their victory against the CSU San Marcos Cougars, the Eagles faced off against the Dixie State Red Storm. The Red Storm came into their match against the Eagles on a one game losing streak and a 1-1 record. Biola’s early success in the season earned them a 4-1 record but they found little success in their match against Dixie State. In a hard fought — and at times frustrating — match that the Eagles lost 0-1 to the Red Storm.
The first period was slow for both teams, but the game picked up when Dixie State took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute of the game. The half ended with the Eagles trailing 1-0 to the Red Storm. With much of the match remaining, the Eagles made a total of 16 shots in the second period. Both senior midfielder John Hanscom and junior forward Leonardo Contreras had six shots during the game, but ultimately the Eagles were unable to recover.
Despite the tough loss still fresh on their minds, the Eagles saw many positives about their match against the Red Storm, including a lot of hard work from the defense.
“That second half we had the team on their heels. They were dropping more numbers back behind the ball and our attackers did a great job of creating quality chances,” sophomore defender Riley Waldeck. “Being down a goal we had to send a lot of numbers forward so when they would counter. We did a good job of shutting them down in the dangerous areas.”
The Eagles’ next match will take on the Bobcats at UC Merced on Sept. 16 at 3 p.m.
