The women’s soccer team has had an impressive start to the 2015 season. They currently stand 3-0-1 and have gone four games without a loss. They won their first two games by more than two goals and their only tie was in the second game of the season against Northwestern Ohio.
AN IMPRESSIVE START
Sophomore forward Samantha Verduzco has excelled in every game the team has played so far this season. After the Eagles’ most recent game on Sep. 5 against the CSU San Marcos she leads the team with four goals scored in eight shots, which gives her the best overall shooting percentage on the team. Not only that, but five of her shots have been on goal. Junior midfielder Jessie Burns has also had an impressive start this season with two goals in five shots.
Senior goalkeeper Amanda Johnson is the last line of defense for the Eagles. This year Johnson has been goalie for all four games and faced 45 shots. With 21 of those shots being on goal, she has only allowed two goals by and has yet to lose a game for the Eagles. She has kept these numbers low through four full games and three overtime periods, adding up to 390 minutes of goalkeeping.
FORCED OVERTIME
Two of their four games have been forced into overtime periods, one resulting in a tie and the other in a last-minute win. In their match against Northwestern Ohio on Aug. 27, the Racers ended the first half ahead of the Eagles 1-0. Biola responded in the second half and the game went into the first overtime period 2-2. The game would end with the same score and the Eagles maintaining their undefeated season.
CONTINUING SUCCESS
Their most recent game against CSU San Marcos on Sep. 5 started off slow, but built up until it ended with a goal in the final minute of the first overtime period. In the first half the Eagles had four shots on goal but drastically slowed down in the second with only two shots on goal. During the second half the Cougars made an offensive surge and the Eagles had a few close calls at the goal. It was not until senior midfielder Amanda Otto, who had already been in for 100 minutes, made the game-winning goal with 1:35 left in the game. Otto already had three assists this season, but that game-winning goal was her first goal of the season.
The Eagles hope to continue their early season winning streak with their next matchup against Pomona-Pitzer in Claremont on Sept. 12 at 11:00 a.m.
