The Biola women’s tennis team lost in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament against Concordia University on April 15. Concordia has beaten the Eagles twice in the regular season and beat them for a third time to advance to the second round of the tournament.

Biola’s only win came from second singles. Juniors Kathryn Ashford and Susan Carmichael defeated their opponents at second doubles by a score of 8-5. The first and third doubles teams for Biola lost 0-8. Concordia entered singles with a 2-1 advantage.

Ashford played Concordia’s top singles player and finished with the closest full match score of 2-6, 1-6. The second and third singles players failed to get a game against their opponents, and the bottom three singles games did not finish because Concordia secured the match win. Biola lost 5-1.

The Eagles conclude their team play of the season and end with a record of 4-19 while being 2-10 in conference. Senior Lauren Vogel and Carmichael played their last match for the Eagles against Concordia.

“It was really sad actually,” Vogel said. “I’ve spent a lot of hours out here on the courts so there’s something really weird about knowing that it’s the last one that you’ll play. I’ve had a lot of great memories out here and it’s just really encouraging. I know I’ve grown as a player over these four years and the relationships I’ve made in the four years mean a lot to me. This team is really something else.”

Some players will continue to compete in the individual Ojai Tennis Tournament starting on April 23. Last season no players from Biola made it past the opening round.
