The Biola women’s basketball team pulled off an upset against the No. 8 Vanguard University on Feb. 21. The Lions have beat the Eagles eight straight times since Biola’s last victory on Feb. 5, 2011.  

The Eagles held the lead for the entirety of the first half, and at one time extended their lead to twelve points. Freshman guard DeMoria White led the Eagles in the first half with 16 points, two assists and a steal. Biola entered the half up 37-32.  

“It was just a lot of internal motivation,” said senior forward Chelsea Hill. “We’ve been working really hard these last couple of days and we came off with a lot of fire from the loss in overtime against Concordia. We just had the mindset that, you know if we can play against Concordia like we did we can beat Vanguard, we can beat anyone in this conference. There was a lot of focus on the five people on the court and that we are here for each other and we are doing everything for each other to win this game.”

Biola maintained their control of the game throughout the second half, allowing the game to be tied twice, but never giving up the lead. The Eagles won the game 81-76.

Sophomore guard Khadidja Diakite finished the game with a team high 19 points and two steals. Senior forward Elizabeth Munger scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the last home game for Biola.

“That was crazy [to win our last home game],” said Munger. “We haven’t beat Vanguard in a really long time and I can’t even explain the feeling, it’s so good.”

The Eagles have two games left in the regular season. The next game is against the No. 16 Master’s College on Feb. 24. If Biola wins, they will tie Master’s in conference records.

“We’re just going to all out fight,” said Munger. “And not give up and leave it all on the court, 100 percent.”
