Biola men’s basketball beat Bethesda University 62-50 Nov. 11, improving their record to 4-0. The Eagles now stand one game away from tying the 2012-2013 season start of 5-0.

Biola obtained the lead early and held onto it for most of the game. Senior forward Mike Kurtz helped his team by scoring 11 points and securing five boards in the first half. The Eagles entered the half 31-26.

Bethesda shot the ball poorly in the second half, shooting only 24 percent from the floor and 12.5 percent behind the arch. Senior guard Pierre Zook scored 14 second-half points to help his team hold on to the lead and finish the game 62-50.

“Tonight, we didn’t play our best ball, but we fought through adversity” said Zook. “I think it was a good team win again.”

Zook was 5-6 behind the arch tonight and has made five three-point baskets in each of the last three games, shooting 75 percent from deep range.

“Just shooting in rhythm” said Zook. “I gotta take what the defense gives me. Our team is playing well together right now and shots are falling.”

Zook finished the game with 19 points and two assists. Kurtz secured his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore guard Grant Corsi lead the bench with 10 points and eight boards.

The Eagles move on to play La Sierra University at home Nov. 12 for their second encounter this season. Biola beat La Sierra on their home court just six days before their rematch with a score of 88-66.

“Well we’re going to be short handed most likely” said Zook. “So we just have to play together, play a hard defense and rebound. They’re a little bit smaller than we are so transition defense is going to be huge.”
