This weekend the Biola women’s golf team competed in their second tournament of the year in the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Firestone Grill Women’s Golf Invitational. The tournament proved disappointing for the women, finishing 11 out of 13 teams.

The women’s team opened up the contest by shooting a 344 on day one. The team added 22 points in the next round with the women shooting a 366 on day two for a combined total of 710. While the team’s performance did stumble on the second day of the match, they were able to maintain their position in the standings, finishing ahead of Idaho State University and UC Santa Cruz.

Senior Whitney Jammerman led the team by shooting a notable 83, and 86 after 36. Two other members of the team also landed scores within the 80’s. Junior Jasmine Rodriguez recorded an 84, and freshmen Sarah Paravia came out with an 86. This marks the second tournament that Jammerman has been the point leader of the team.

Jammerman finished the tournament shooting an impressive 169 to go 23-up on the weekend, with other noticeable rounds delivered by Paravia going 28-up and Rodriguez 34-up. Sophomore Amanda Hobbs rounded her weekend out with a 43-up, and freshman Lauren Van Horn with a 51-up.    

While still early in the season, the women have the luxury of time to improve on their skills in hopes of securing the Golden State Athletic Conference championship on April 13-14. This year’s team overflows with rookie talent, with the new abilities bringing a serious advantage to the team’s play.

Head Coach Jane Carr has high ambitions for the team as they move on with their season. The addition of the rookies promises the Biola women’s golf team many successful years to follow.    

This tournament marks the second event the women have competed in this year and they have now reached the quarter point of their schedule. Prior to the Firestone Grill invitational, the women had hoped to score big at the Embry-Riddle Co-Ed Invitational on Sept. 28-29, with their performance sharing similar results to their last appearance finishing fourth out of six.

The women’s team hopes to rise from the ashes and improve their record on Nov. 3-4 when they compete in the CSUSM Fall Classic in San Marcos, California.
