The women’s volleyball team continues their success with a 7-1 Golden State Athletic Conference record and an overall record of 17-4. The Eagles won the past five GSAC matches and maintain a second place GSAC ranking.

The Eagles swept the Master’s College during their home game on Oct. 2. Junior outside hitters Joclyn Kirton and Alyssa Mason led the team in kills for the match. The Eagles had difficulty blocking attacks made by the Mustangs near the end of the second set but kept a lead of 25-14. Biola closed the third set with a strong 25-17.

Biola added another win against William Jessup University on Oct. 4. The Eagles took advantage of the many errors William Jessup committed. Both teams looked to gain the lead during the second set, but Biola was able to come out on top 25-12. The Eagles ended the third set 25-15, resulting in another sweep for the Eagles to bring their overall record to 16-4.

The game against Westmont College on Oct. 7 kept fans from both teams in suspense. Westmont proved a challenging opponent compared to the previous two teams Biola faced. The Eagles won the first set of the match 25-13, but failed to defeat Westmont in the second and third sets.

Both teams battled for the lead in the fourth set, matching each other’s score a total of 12 times. The Warriors committed ten errors to Biola’s advantage. Despite facing challenges in previous two sets, Biola closed the fourth set 25-20, causing the game to go into a fifth set. In the final set, the Eagles continued their forward momentum to finish the game 15-8.

“We need to make sure that we stay strong even in the middle of our games,” said Mason. “In game two and three, we kind of let up a little bit, so we just need to make sure that we’re playing our hardest.”

Mason earned GSAC volleyball player of the week, making a total of 10 kills in the game against William Jessup University with a hitting percentage of .750.

The women work hard by preparing for their next match and improving important skills.

“We are actually doing film. We’re going to analyze our next opponent and see what they hit, where they’re making progress,” said junior defensive specialist Alex Brehaut. “We just work hard to prepare for the next one and practice hard and hopefully come out strong”

The Eagles hope to maintain their winning streak throughout the rest of the season.

“We want to go undefeated for the rest of the season — that’s our goal. To keep practicing hard, and plan our game,” said Brehaut.

The team also addresses weaknesses in hopes of continuing a successful season.

“Sometimes we just get quiet, and we aren’t as energetic as we need to be. We’ve been working on team comradery” said Mason.

The Eagles look to continue their GSAC record of 7-1 and maintain their second place ranking after playing against Hope International University on Oct. 11.
