The women’s volleyball team added another win to their 16-4 record after playing a conference match against William Jessup University on Oct. 4.

The team unity and the amount of effort put into practice attributes to the level of success the team maintains.

“The coach has been having us work extra hard and give 110 percent, so that’s helped us both bond as a team and be able to work together,” said junior middle blocker Lauren Hoenecke. “It’s helped us understand the flow of the game and how to help each other play better.”

Biola opened the game with Hoenecke quickly scoring the first point. William Jessup matched the Eagles score soon after, gaining a point from an attack error made by the Eagles. The Biola women took advantage of the six errors the Warriors committed to finish the first set 25-12.

The second set proved more difficult for the Eagles. The Warriors gained the first two points from two kills made by Caitlyn Quindoy of William Jessup. The Eagles had difficulty blocking against the Warriors during the set and both teams battled for the lead. Biola scored five points from four kills and an attack error, giving the Eagles a lead 18-10. The Eagles continued this scoring rhythm, ending the set identical to the first, 25-12.

This momentum continued into the final set of the game. Biola scored two points at the start of the set. The Warriors continued committing errors to strengthen Biola’s lead. The Eagles made a total of 15 kills in the set, finishing the set 25-15 and resulting in a 3-0 win.

The Eagles continue learning from and improving upon each game.

“Something that I’ve learned is to have fun and make sure that we’re playing our game, no matter what,” said Hoenecke. “Sometimes you have a tendency to play off of what the other team is doing, but we need to be able to stay focused and play our game.”

The Eagles had a strong game offensively with senior middle blocker Amy Weststeyn leading the pack with a hitting percentage of .706. Hoenecke also had a solid game with a .558 hitting percentage. Weststeyn and sophomore offensive hitter Olivia Sorensen kept the eagles front line defensively strong with five blocks each.

The Eagles currently rank second in the Golden State Athletic Conference standings with a record of 6-1 and will play another conference match at home on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. against Westmont College.
