The women’s volleyball team’s winning record increased to 14-4 after a sweep against The Master’s College on Oct. 2.

“I think that we were pretty mentally tough throughout the entire thing” said junior outside hitter Alyssa Mason.

The Eagles won both of the matches against the Mustangs last season and have secured another win after tonight’s match.

Biola started the game gaining two points off of an attack error made by middle blocker Allison Child and a service error by middle blocker Britney Jones. The teams equally matched up at the beginning of the first set, but the Eagles took the lead to end the first set 25-19.

During the second set, junior defensive specialist Alex Brehaut scored four consecutive points, two of which came from attack errors. The Eagles also scored points off of two service aces. Biola had difficulties defending against the Mustangs near the end of the second set, but stayed strong with a score of 25-14.

The Eagles kept up the energy of the game by starting off the third set with with two kills made by junior outside hitter Joclyn Kirton and junior outside hitter Britta Blaser. Biola ended the third set 25-17, closing the game with a 3-0 win over the Mustangs.

Kirton and Mason were key players in the game, scoring 13 kills and 10 kills, respectively.  Other standout players included junior middle blocker Lauren Hoenecke with three blocks and Brehaut with nine digs.

The team has worked hard during practices, and applies what they have learned to current matches.

“Lately we’ve been working on a new defense. For the past few days we’ve been working as hard as we can for long periods of time,” Kirton said. “We’ve been really working on our blocking, making sure that our hands are in the right position. We’ve just been focusing on that mostly.”

Biola currently ranks second in the Golden State Athletic Conference standings. The Eagles’ next GSAC match is against William Jessup University at home on Oct. 4 starting at 2 p.m.
