The Biola Eagles continued their winning streak with another three set sweep of the Arizona Christian University Firestorm. The impressive performances of middle blockers senior Amy Weststeyn and junior Lauren Hoenecke led the Eagles to victory. Weststeyn and Hoenecke combined for 24 kills, while only committing two errors, as well as 10 total blocks.
The first set started off slowly, with neither team gaining a lead of over four points. The Firestorm tied the match at 8-8, which would prove the last time the score would show a tie. The Eagles went on a tear, scoring eight unanswered points, creating a gap that would prove too much for ACU to overcome. BU went on to win the set comfortably, 25-15.
In the second set, ACU jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, showing they were not out of the fight yet. Biola responded accordingly, and quickly evened out the score at eight, just like the first set. And, just like the first set, Biola took control of the game from there. They went on to another victory, 25-17.
ACU showed more improvement in the third set, but could not hold off Biola’s potent offense. The Eagle’s domination of the third set started when they were down 10-7. ACU then committed four errors in a row, and through an overpowering offensive effort led by Weststeyn, Hoenecke, and junior outside hitter Alyssa Mason the Eagles went on an 18-3 scoring run, culminating in a decisive final set victory 25-13.
Blocking played an important role in this game, as the double block of Mason and Hoenecke won both the first and second sets. Biola had 19 total blocks, lead by six from Hoenecke, four from Weststeyn and three from Mason, whereas ACU only garnered four.
With this win, the Eagles improve to 14-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play. Their next match will be at home game against The Master’s College Mustangs at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2nd.
