Upon further investigation, Campus Safety is unsure about the cause of the South Horton fourth floor fire. The incident occurred in a dorm room on Sept. 10 around 3:20 p.m., according to Justin Shelby, Campus Safety public information officer. Originally it was deemed an electrical fire, however Campus Safety has not found evidence to support the initial conclusion based on eyewitness reports.

One of the resident’s bed received some minor damage, including the mattress and bed frame. Students extinguished the fire before Campus Safety arrived, therefore the fire department was not called, Shelby said.

Students observed a resident running down the fire escape stairs saying that her outlet was sparking and another student had poured water on it. The room filled with smoke shortly after, said Kaitlin Anderson, freshman communication disorders major.
