The Eagles took on the Vanguard University Lions tonight in a game that had the entire crowd off their seats. With excitement from beginning to end, the team fought hard and ended in victory, bringing their season to 11-4.

Senior middle blocker Amy Weststeyn led the team on the court tonight, ending the game with a total of 12 kills and only two errors. Another standout was junior outside hitter Joclyn Kirton who had some powerful hits that allowed her to become an important aspect of tonight’s win.

Together the duo made for a powerhouse front row that became too much for the Lions.

“Vanguard is a generally good team, we didn’t have concerns really, but we did work on our blocking and set up a different defense to play them,” said Kirton about the worries the team faced going into this game.

In the first set the teams went point for point until Biola gained momentum and took the set. Both teams started off shaky during this round and numerous unforced errors occurred. The set ended at 24-16 with the Eagles in the lead.

When the teams walked on for the second set they had new confidence and played hard to the end. The set showed the equal levels of power in the middle hitters between the two teams and the back row athletes showed their talents from both sides of the net. The final score of this set was 25-20, another win for Biola.

The third set was a thriller as both teams fought to come out on top. Both teams made extravagant efforts, filling the set with long and exciting rallies. In the end, the Eagles overpowered, finishing the set strong with a final score of 30-28.

“One of our biggest weaknesses is that we need to work on pushing to the end and finishing the set, which I thought we did tonight and so we are really happy with that,” said Kirton.

The Eagle’s next matchup is a home game versus Hope International University this Saturday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m.
