Biola men’s golf finished sixth among the six teams participating in the 2014 Firestorm Invitational that took place on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Junior captain William Langworthy led the Eagles with a tournament score of 74 on round one and 73 on round two for a total score of 147, seven strokes over the tournament winner.

“It’s the first tournament and first week back, so we’ll probably have a little bit of rust to shake off and a little bit of a learning curve,” said junior Kevin Vandekamp.

Biola shot 311 on the first day and 312 on the second to finish the tournament at 623. They were 44 strokes behind first place team Embry-Riddle who scored 294 for round one, 285 for round two, and 579 for the tournament. Other teams from the GSAC conference included Arizona Christian University and Hope International University. ACU split their roster into two teams.Their first team scored 293 on Saturday and 297 on Sunday for a tournament score of 590. Their second team scored 299 on day one and 310 on day two, for a total score of 609 strokes. HIU ended one spot ahead of Biola with a score of 310 in the opening round and 301 in the second for a total of 611.

“I think we’re going to have a really successful season,” Vandekamp said. “We had a really down season last year with a lot of things falling through at the last minute and a not having a lot of players, so it will be a good change this year to have more players and more freshman and a consistent coaching staff.”

Up next for Biola is the California State Intercollegiate on Sept. 22-23.
