It is a big week for women’s volleyball as the No. 3 Eagles took down their opponents in both of their games. They are getting ready to compete for the number one slot in the Golden Athletic State Conference at 7 p.m. on Nov. 16 against Concordia University at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles played Westmont last Saturday in a match that was over in just over an hour. Biola dominated the court, winning three consecutive matches. Within minutes into the first set, the Eagles took and held the lead over Westmont throughout the match. They stopped Westmont completely at 18 points, scoring until they finished the match with a final score of 25-18.

The second set was very similar to the first. The Eagles took the lead with kills from sophomore outside hitters Alyssa Mason and Britta Blaser. They continued their kill streak and finished the second match with over 10 points on Westmont in a final score of 25-14. Biola finished the game in the third set with a score of 25-18, shutting out Westmont 3-0.

For junior middle blocker Amy Weststeyn, the game against Westmont was one of her best — possibly ever. Weststeyn did not make a single error in the entire game, and her attack accuracy was .833.

TWO GAMES, TWO WINS

On Tuesday night the Eagles had another sweep against San Diego Christian University. Biola held a small lead for the start of the first set but pulled ahead to finish with a final score of 25-19. Their second set flew by and the Eagles stopped the Hawks at 16 points, winning their second match. The Hawks fought back in the third set and tied up the score a few times, but they eventually fell behind. The final set ended with a score of 25-18.

Senior setter Gracee Gallarda finished the game with a total of 11 digs, and Weststeyn racked up 11 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Joclyn Kirton and sophomore outside hitter Lauren Hoenecke trailed close behind Weststeyn with 9 kills each.

The two wins bring Biola to 11-1 in GSAC, keeping them tied with No. 2 Concordia. The Eagles play their final and possibly most important game of the season this Saturday when they take on the Irvine Eagles.
A win would vault Biola into first place over Concordia, resulting in BU’s first GSAC title since 1997.

Ultimately, Biola doesn’t need a victory over Concordia to get into the NAIA tournament, but a win would mean a huge momentum swing before heading to Sioux City.
