It was a tough start to the fall season for Biola golf, as both the men and women took part in tournaments over the weekend but were unable to claim a top spot.

The men placed 10th out of 11 teams at the Cal State intercollegiate tournament and the women ended in 7th out of seven teams at the Point Loma Fall Preview Classic.

Finishing with a three day total of 971 and finishing just one stroke back of the ninth place finisher, the men were led by senior Max Allen. Allen shot 87-80-81 to finish with a 239 total.

Sophomores William Langworthy and Lucas Kinan finished second and third, respectively, with totals in the low forties. Sophomore Kevin Vandekamp snagged the fourth place Biola slot with 252 and junior Micah Mathis finished out the Eagles with 259.

The course proved to be difficult for all competitors, as only the top four finishers overall finished under-par. Despite the difficult three days for the Eagles, they have a long season ahead of them and plenty of time to work on their game.

“No one can deny that we left a lot of shots out there,” Vandekamp said. “On one hand, you keep this in the back of your mind for motivation, but at the same time you have to realize it was only one tournament.”

On the women’s side, the Eagles failed to come close to any of their other competitors. Biola finished 25 strokes back of the sixth place finisher Dominican University and 120 strokes back of champion Cal Baptist University.

There were several bright spots for the Eagles though. Sophomore Jasmine Rodriguez finished her first round with an 85 and led Biola with a 28th place finish. Senior Jackie Mata completed the two-day tournament one stroke back of Rodriguez in 29th place.

Both teams will move forward aiming to take advantage of future playing opportunities.

“We really need a few solid rounds to get our confidence back because playing golf with doubts is a recipe for disaster,” Vandekamp said.
