Event Recap

This week’s Associated Students meeting began with a Splash! recap, covering the common student complaints about the Aug. 30 event. Complaints included park overcrowding and the length of the event.

The next big AS event is Nationball, happening next Thursday, Sept. 12. The senators were reminded that each student needs to sign a waiver, and participants under the age of 18 need parental consent.

Nationball Proposal

The first proposal of the year was made by Haley Nickel, from spirit events, on the topic of Nationball. She proposed that AS buy a new set of dodgeballs for Nationball for the amount of $180. In previous years Nationball has used intramurals’ dodgeballs, but due to the start of the season, Nationball will not be able to use the balls in case of damage or loss during the event.

“This is a tradition. These dodgeballs will be a big investment,” Nickel said.

Due to the urgency of the proposal, the senate did a same-day vote. They voted unanimously to pass the proposal and buy the dodgeballs.

Diversity Update

Diversity liaison Jackeline Arias informed the rest of the senators of involvement opportunities on-campus. These included the Mosaic Cultural Center, multi-ethnic clubs, joining the gospel choir and becoming a conversation partner. A conversation partner meets with an international student to develop their English and learn more about American culture for 30 minutes once a week.

Announcements

The deadline for first-year students to apply for the AS internships is coming up soon. The meeting ended with student complaints collected by the senators and the dividing of senator committees, including Caf committee, senior gift committee and election committee.
