The men’s and women’s track teams competed in the NAIA Indoor Championship in Geneva, Ohio Thursday through Saturday.

The meets were highlighted by a pair of school records broken by the men’s team and one on the women’s side.

Sophomore Andrew Daedler broke Biola’s 1,000-meter race record with a time of 2:30.04 on Friday.

On Thursday, the men’s distance medley relay team — consisting of junior Danny Ledesma, Daedler, and freshmen Shane Brinson and James McCahon — broke a Biola record with a time of 10:16.1.

On Saturday, freshman Kellian Hunt continued her amazing freshman year by placing second in the mile and posting a school record time of 4:57.52, two seconds faster than Nychele Fischetti’s record time last year.

First day has great results

The women’s distance medley relay team qualified for the finals with a time of 12:04.06 on the first day. The team consisted of sophomore Tayllor Lemphers and freshmen Ilima Kung, Anika Gasner and Hunt.

The women’s 4×800 team also qualified for the finals with a time of 9:09.54. The team was made up of Hunt, Gasner, junior Alexandra Sciarra and freshman Alicia Hoverson.

“We were excited and thankful to make it to the finals and we wanted to focus on doing our best,” Sciarra said. “We were prepared training-wise and we just wanted to go out and bring God glory and work together as a team.”

Junior Lauren Houck placed 13th overall in the pentathlon with 2,892 points.

Day two sees more strong results

The women’s 4×800 team took second overall with a time of 9:10.06, collecting an All-American honor.

Sciarra also qualified in the 600 with a time of 1:34.91. Junior Chelsea Janzen qualified in the 3,000 with a time of 10:28.10. Kellian Hunt also qualified in the 1,000 with a time of 2:54.70.

Final day sees strong finish

Hunt took third overall in the 1,000 with a time of 2:53.13. Gasner was able to place seventh overall in the 800 with a time of 2:18.06. Sciarra placed eighth overall in the 600 with a time of 1:39.08.

The women’s distance medley team was also able to secure a third-place finish with a time of 12:03.09.

The women’s team finished sixth overall at the tournament, making this the fifth straight season they have finished in the top ten.

“It was cool to see how our team as a whole could complement each other and encourage one another in times of stress and compete well despite being tired and in a different time zone,” Sciarra said.

Biola will continue their outdoor season at the Ben Brown Invitational at California State University, Fullerton on Saturday, March 9.
