Best finish in school history for Eagles at swim championships

The Eagles finished in the top three at the PCSC Championships on Saturday.

Going into the last meet before the NAIA National Championships, the Eagles were looking for both the men and women to step up at the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships with some big swims.

They did not disappoint.

Sophomore Christine Tixier was the big story of the meet. Tixier was named NAIA Women’s Swimmer of the Meet after producing with big finishes in the championships held at Splash Aquatics Center in La Mirada. Her best race was the 100 fly, where she finished third with a solid time of 56:02. She also secured a fourth place finish in the 200 fly at 2:04.62, and finishing up her meet with a 12th-place 200 IM with a time of 2:09.08.

The Eagles saw other big key finishes from both the men and the women.

Junior Daniel Mendoza punched his ticket to nationals, after qualifying in the 1650. Freshman Abby Blake also swam the 1650, posting a school record of 17:53.91, earning her eighth.

Senior Chris Stutzman and freshman Eric Sirjord both finished with two top-12 finishes. Stutzman also broke the school record in the 200 fly with a time of 1:58.00, which he swam as a time trial.

Biola also picked up a few more national qualifying events. Austin Sarna, who swam the 100 and 200 breast, Megan Bradenbert, in the 100 free, and Megan Nerud, in the 100 back, all finished with national qualifying times in their respective events.

The meet marks the first time Biola has finished in the top three at the PCSC Championships. The Eagles will have some time for rest and preparation before the departing for Oklahoma City. NAIA Nationals are scheduled to take place Feb. 28 – March 2.
