Biola baseball committed six errors, allowing four unearned runs in a 5-4 non-conference loss to California State University, San Marcos on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

In a game where weather played a factor, Biola’s defense was shaky in the cold, making the most errors the program has recorded since Feb. 25, 2010 against Point Loma Nazarene University — when they committed six as well.

“Catching fly balls was difficult because the rain was blowing directly into our eyes early in the game,” senior center fielder Benji Sutherland said.

Junior outfielder Vince Lawrence’s dropped fly ball in the second inning — along with the walk that followed — scored on San Marcos senior catcher Kody Sepulveda’s two-run triple. The Cougars added two more in an error-packed fourth inning, including errors by junior reliever Will Emerson, junior catcher Nick Oddo and junior first baseman Sage Poland.

Eagles mount late inning comeback but fall short

The Cougars scored just one earned run — an RBI-single from junior designated hitter Kyle Kuck — in the seventh inning to increase their lead to three before Biola mounted a two-out, ninth-inning rally.

Sutherland drew a walk between two of San Marcos right-hander James Dykstra’s 11 strikeouts, followed by a single from freshman catcher Sam Thorne. Junior second baseman Michael Annunziata then plated both runners with a double before Lawrence popped out to the shortstop to end the rally.

San Marcos remained undefeated thanks to a complete-game effort from Dykstra, who won his third consecutive start.

The Eagles will resume Golden State Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon, starting a three-game series with Concordia University Irvine.
