Mitt Romney could be the CEO of America

Austin May argues that Romney’s business experience could be just what the country needs.

In recent weeks, the rising tension between our two presidential candidates has been undeniable. Both feel passionate about their forms of change for America and feel that if they aren’t elected to carry out those changes, America is headed for trouble. Gov. Mitt Romney argues that President Barack Obama’s poor economic policies have put us further into a sinking hole and also tries to convince Americans that he has a solid solution for the economy. Current polls indicate that the majority of Americans feel that our economy is in trouble and that whoever is elected president should make the economy their top priority.

In 2008, I was an enthusiastic supporter of the Obama campaign. I donated money, went to the rallies and canvassed with hopes that he would win the election. When Obama won the election, I was ecstatic for the future of our country. Little did I know that the administration would only disappoint. Four years later, we have added $4 trillion to our national debt, unemployment is still high, and our global influence is on the decline. This election, my choice is obvious: Romney.

Given that Obama’s policies haven’t worked, we need a businessman rather than a charismatic pop culture figure to be president. A strong leader knows how to create sustaining financials, lead a company and ultimately create a competitive advantage for the business. We are currently experiencing one of the worst economies in American history. The policies of the last four years have been deceitful and our economy is still at a very weak place. It is clear that new direction for our economy is imperative.

It’s no secret that when it comes to the economy, Romney’s experience with developing businesses and making executive decisions as a business leader is incomparable. He founded a business and grew it into a multi-million dollar corporation. I believe that he can take those same skills and apply them to the United States government. America is a “fix-up” company that needs a change agent to come in and restructure the way our economy is run. Additionally, as the governor of Massachusetts, Romney balanced the budget and created health care for 98 percent of the state’s citizens.

While Romney had tremendous experience in this field, President Obama had none. Prior to being elected, Obama served as a senator, junior senator and a lawyer. Although his public service is commendable, there is little experience in building a strong economy. America gave him a shot in 2008 based on his intelligence and charisma. Over the last four years, we have faced disappointment as unemployment is at 7.8 percent and the national debt has dramatically increased. If “hope and change” cannot occur with a Democratic majority in the Congress, it will never occur.  When it comes to the economy, Romney is the clear choice.

While the economy is important, a large portion of the president’s job is to handle foreign policy issues. At this point, Obama has done an adequate job handling foreign policy. He did something President George W. Bush was unable to do: kill Osama Bin Laden. While that’s commendable, our position among the other nations of the world is decreasing and it’s primarily a result of the economy. Currently, we owe China trillions of dollars and are becoming increasingly reliant on foreign goods. If these policies continue, our global standing will plummet.

If Romney is elected, I believe that the improved economy will increase America’s global influence. In addition, a good CEO knows that he must surround himself with the most intelligent people in his field. Though Romney’s experience in foreign policy isn’t as extensive as Obama’s, his relationships with other leaders and advisers will ultimately help him make the right choices for America.

This is a pivotal moment in America’s history that will dramatically shape our future. We are deciding between a future of prosperity or a future of disappointment. Romney’s business background will provide America with the necessary steps to get back as the world’s leading nation. For that reason, I am voting for Romney for CEO of America.
