Senior Joshua Mathis was the highlight of the men’s golf team’s performance at the California State Intercollegiate Tournament with a second place finish. The team placed seventh out of eight teams, finishing 58 strokes behind the first place finisher California State University, San Marcos.
Mathis, a Colorado native, made a charge at first place Shane Favinger from Holy Names University, but finished one stroke short. Favinger led Mathis by six strokes going into the third and final round, but Mathis’ 71 was not enough to catch him after Favinger shot a 76. Mathis had an aggregate score of 218 while Favinger had a 217.
Senior Conner Penfold finished with an aggregate score of 244 and tied for 43rd place with a fellow Biolan, freshman Joel Smith.
The women’s team finished 14th of 17 teams in the Grand Canyon Women’s Fall Invitational. Freshman Ava Lourenco was Biola’s top finisher, placing eighth and shooting 6-over. Lourenco was tied for second going into the second and final round, but a 79 in the final round dropped her down. Senior Lauren Marlow finished 36th for Biola, shooting 16-over to start her final season.
The men’s and women’s next tournament is this Saturday at Embry-Riddle Co-Ed Invitational Golf Tournament.
