The Biola women’s soccer team faced Colorado Christian University at home, losing 1-0 on a last-minute goal on Aug. 30. However, Biola got their first win of the season Tuesday night against Marymount College, winning 2-0 at home.

In the first half of the game against Colorado, Biola had multiple shots on goal, but the ten shots taken just would not go in the goal and the game remained scoreless into the half.

Biola misses shots, defeated in last two minutes

Going into the second half, Biola’s defense kept the pressure and the forwards pushed for a goal. With nine minutes left in the game, junior forward Jessica Austin went one-on-one with the Cougar’s goalkeeper. The goalie slid one way and Austin went another, chip shooting the ball, but the shot was slightly too wide and missed.

Colorado’s goalkeeper, Caitlyn Moses, made eight saves in the game, while Biola’s sophomore Briana Williams made only one. With two minutes remaining, one of the four shots made by Colorado in the entire game found the inside of the goal, giving Colorado a final win of 1-0.

“I think we were there; it’s just getting the ball in the back of the net is always a problem, so we’ll get there,” sophomore defender Michelle Clark said.

Eagles emerge victors after Marymount fouls striker

Tuesday night, the Eagles secured their first win of the season, 2-0. Marymount got off to a slow start and throughout the first half Biola kept most possession of the ball. Just eight minutes into the half, senior Brittany Barr dribbled past the goalkeeper and put it in the net.

Marymount came aggressively into the second half, but again none of their four shots taken in the half were near the goal.

With 87 minutes past, a Marymount defender fouled a Biola striker, allowing a free kick just on top of the 18-yard box. Senior midfielder Katie Cabuling took the kick, which went around Marymount’s wall and past the fingertips of their goalie — giving Cabuling her first goal of the season and making the score 2-0.

Quickly after that goal, the same play happened on Biola’s side, but Marymount missed the opportunity to score. Williams did not have to make any saves in the match.

Austin had an opportunity for another goal, cutting past defenders into the open field; when Marymount’s goalie came out to pressure her, Austin passed the ball to an open senior Stephanie Cubias. Cubias shot the ball toward the net and it looked like it was a certain goal, but a Marymount defender came out of nowhere and blocked the shot.

“Our key was to stay calm and just know we are skilled and just know that even though they were coming out against us,” Cabuling said. “We were calm and we could handle whatever they threw at us.”

The Biola women’s team is now 1-2-0 and face Pomona-Pitzer Saturday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.

“The game last year against Pomona-Pitzer was not too good so I definitely am looking forward to getting some revenge and just playing the way we can play,” Cabuling said. “I think everyone remembers that game as a standout game that we all were off so it’ll be cool to play them again and get a second chance out of it.”
