Concordia University again jumped out to an early lead on Biola Friday afternoon at Eagles Diamond and hung on to win 4-2, handing Biola their second straight loss.

Biola falls to 10-8 in Golden State Athletic Conference play, two games back of second place Concordia.

Concordia capitalizes on early scoring

Like Thursday’s series opener, Concordia’s leadoff hitter left fielder Ty Holm quickly reached base, this time via a double, and scored the first run of the game of off third baseman Spencer Ofelt’s RBI single.

Concordia’s catcher Chris Kuber led off the second inning with his first home run of the year, extending the lead to two. Concordia added a pair of runs in the fourth, and that was all they needed.

Starting pitcher Thomas Hoenshell of Concordia kept Biola off the board until one out in the fifth when junior center fielder Benji Sutherland’s two-RBI double cut the lead in half, scoring runners from first and second.

Sutherland has accounted for four of the teams last nine runs and is batting .417 over that span.

Baek throws second straight complete game

Biola’s starting pitcher, junior Chris Baek, gave up three runs and 10 hits en route to just his third loss of the year.

“It was tough today,” Baek said. “I just didn’t have my best stuff from the get go so it was a battle all day long.”

Baek pitched all nine innings for the Eagles, his second straight complete game.

Tomorrow the Eagles will travel south and try to salvage the series in Irvine. A sweep of the doubleheader would move Biola back into a tie with Concordia for second place in the GSAC standings.

Junior Nick Turner and sophomore Javier Martinez will pitch tomorrow’s games for the Eagles.
