Biola baseball needed a sweep in Santa Clarita to make a move at The Master’s College in the Golden State Athletic Conference standings. And after an eighth inning comeback resulted in a victory in Thursday’s matchup, it was starting pitcher Chris Baek’s complete game shutout that completed the sweep on Friday.

Baek leads Eagles past Mustangs

Baek took the mound for the eighth time this season and struck out two of the first three batters he faced, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. He struck out seven and gave up only five hits en route to his fourth win of the season.

“It was honestly a team effort,” Baek said. “There was great defense all game long and Wes [Cottier] called a good game.”

Biola jumped out to an early lead thanks to a three-run first inning, sparked by RBI hits from sophomore outfielder Michael Annunziata and senior third baseman Drake Fages.

Home runs from Annunziata and Sutherland extend Biola’s lead

Annunziata along with junior center fielder Benji Sutherland added insurance runs with home runs in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively.

Sutherland’s two-run shot in the sixth was just the second of his college career, and it came with no shortage of theatrics. Showing bunt as pitcher James Scott started his motion, Sutherland pulled back and hit an inside fastball over the right field fence, extending the lead to six. But that was only half of it.

“The first baseman stepped in my way when I went to step on first and I fell down,” Sutherland said, smiling. “It was pretty funny.”

Master’s had a home record of 13-2 at Reece Field before the Eagles came in and took both games, outscoring the Mustangs 9-2 in the span.
