A 27-year-old man suspected of murder was fatally shot by a Los Angeles Police Department and an FBI special taskforce on Thursday, March 1, at around 8:30 a.m. The incident took place on Escalona Road in La Mirada, Calif., according to a report by The Whittier Daily News.

When ordered by police to leave the house they believed he had been occupying, the man instead climbed onto a nearby roof. He then ignored the police’s demands to come down and fired a shot in the direction of the 15 officers who had come to apprehend him. The LAPD returned fire, striking the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or other witnesses were harmed.

The man was a suspect in the Nov. 20, 2011, shooting that resulted in the deaths of two men, Arturo Gomez, 31, and Jesus Rendon, 36. The men were shot in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. Police went searching for the suspect after a warrant for his arrest was handed down in January of 2012, leading them to the address in the 15500-block of Escalona Road.

Escalona Elementary School, which is located on the same street as the shooting, was put into lockdown this morning as an additional measure of safety, according to KTLA Los Angeles. No one was harmed, and the lockdown has since been suspended.

The LAPD, which as been working in conjunction with the FBI to track down the suspect, is conducting a further investigation of the incident. They have yet to release an official identification of the man.
