Biola volleyball stays hot, beats Fresno Pacific

The women’s volleyball team won 3-2 against Fresno Pacific University in the first round of bracket play at the NAIA Volleyball National Championships.

Eagles finish of Sunbirds with 3-2 victory

Biola University volleyball continued its winning ways on Friday, Dec. 2 with a 3-2 match victory over Fresno Pacific University in the first game of bracket play at the 2011 NAIA Volleyball National Championships. Biola maintains its undefeated record at 4-0 while Fresno incurred their first loss and was eliminated from the tournament.

Biola junior Christine Douglas led all players with 20 kills, senior Sarah Schweiger added 13 kills and freshman Amy Weststeyn contributed 11. Senior Christian Woodfruff’s 19 digs were a match high as well.

Eagles win set five thanks to Schweiger’s two kills

These two teams played a very close match, with Biola winning in five sets. The Eagles took the first set 25-20, then the Sunbirds took set two by the final of 25-23. Biola won set three, and then Fresno Pacific followed by taking set four, tying the game at two sets apiece and setting the Eagles up for a 15-11 fifth, and final set victory.

Schweiger’s two kills in the final few plays helped Biola finish off Fresno in the fifth set, advancing the Eagles in the tournament and dropping the Sunbirds from contention.

Eagles advance to quarterfinals

Biola takes on NAIA No. 3 Lee University in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m.
