Women’s basketball splits pair of home games

The women’s basketball team lost against Lewis-Clark State College on Nov. 12, but they won on Nov. 15 against Whittier College.

Eagles fall short at home against Lewis-Clark, crush Whittier

The Biola women’s basketball team came up short Friday, Nov. 11 against NAIA No. 5 Lewis-Clark State College, losing 66-55. Then they pleased the home crowd with an 82-32 victory over Whittier College on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

With the score even at the break in the game against Lewis-Clark, the Warriors went on a 9-0 run to start the second half.

“We got great shots at the baskets, but missed a couple layups so they [Lewis-Clark] pulled away,” head coach Bethany Miller said.

The Eagles fought back and cut the lead to four with 9:03 left on the clock, but a couple consecutive buckets for the Warriors clinched the win.

“We were making stupid mistakes,” sophomore center Adijat Adams said.

Fouls prove costly against Warriors

Biola committed 21 personal fouls in the game leading to 17 points for Lewis-Clark.

Jasmine Stohr for the Warriors led all scorers with 23 points while adding four rebounds and three assists. Kirsi Vishell, also for Lewis-Clark came off the bench adding 13 points in 25 minutes of play.

The Eagles shot 40 percent from the field in the first half before falling to 17.9 shooting percentage in the second half.

“We got a little bit tired and a little bit fatigued toward the end of the game,” Miller said about the second half with Lewis-Clark.

Freshman Chelsea Hill and seniors Lauren Gustafson and Emily Drews all came up with 13 points apiece for the Eagles. Senior Charrise Reece also added 11 total rebounds, eight of them on the offensive boards.

Eagles beat Whittier by 50

With the first loss of the season to Lewis-Clark State, the Eagles bounced back and sparked a 50-point win over Whittier College on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

The Eagles defeated the Poets 82-32 putting them at 3-1 to start off the season. Biola crushed Whittier College in almost every category. They more than doubled their opponents in rebounds, assists, blocks and steals.

“Our goal coming into the game was to play our hardest,” Adams said after the game Tuesday at Chase Gymnasium. Adams had 20 points and added seven rebounds for Biola.

Freshman Elizabeth Munger came up with nine points and 10 rebounds off the bench, one point shy of a double-double. Drews also added 11 points for the Eagles.

“Our team really executed tonight,” Miller said. “We made good decisions.”

Biola had a 39.1 shooting percentage for the game.

The Eagles kept all the Whittier players under 10 points. Brittany Aranda led the Poets with eight points and three rebounds. Alex Coon also added seven points and three rebounds.

Whittier struggled with shooting throughout the entire game. The Poets only shot 22.8 percent from the field and 30 percent from the free throw line. They also did not make any 3-pointer out of 13 shots taken.

Biola will come back to Chase Gymnasium Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. to face California State University Dominguez Hills.
