Biola dominates against Marymount College

The Biola women’s soccer team cruised to a 3-0 victory against Marymount College and improved to a 3-4 record on Tuesday night. With each goal scored by a different player, the Eagles’ teamwork was evident. The game was the team’s last preseason match before they enter conference play.

Teamwork strong throughout entire game

Everything seemed to be clicking for the Eagles, who took control of the game from the start.

“I feel like we played great. We connected our passes well and had great intensity. We were able to be first to almost every ball in the air and on the ground, which helped us succeed,” sophomore Victoria Dalla Zanna said.

At the 16 minute mark, junior Katie Cabuling received a nice pass from senior Brittany Barr and fired it home, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

“We connected really well as a team, kept possession of the ball and were able to be patient and finished our opportunities in front of the net,” Cabuling said.

The score remained that way for the remainder of the first half, but the game continued to be entertaining thanks to good defensive play by the goalkeepers of both teams. Senior Erin Frushon had only one save, but recorded her second shutout of the season and lowered her goals against average to 0.90.

Biola takes control from the start

The Eagles maintained their one-goal lead well into the second half. However, they were not finished yet. Biola solidified their victory with two goals in the last five minutes of the game. In the 87th minute Dalla Zanna tapped in a great pass from junior Natalie Guerrieri, making the score 2-0. About a minute later, sophomore Jessica Austin scored her team-best third goal of the season on a breakaway.

If the Eagles continue to play in sync, they will be a powerful force in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

“I think this season we will be a strong contender. We do have a younger team but I know we will put up a good fight against each team we play,” Dalla Zanna said. “I am really excited to see what God has in store for us.”

Eagles have momentum going into conference games

Biola enters conference play with a 3-4 record, but three of the four losses were decided by only one goal. After several disappointing losses like this, it made this win all the more important — giving the Eagles momentum they hope will carry into their conference play.

“I am super excited going into regular season with a win like the one last night,” Cabuling said. “It gives our team a much-needed confidence booster and allows for our team to take all the positives from last night and build on them to bring them into our first conference game.”

They return to the turf on Saturday, Oct. 1 to take on Concordia University in an away game.
