Biola beats Whitter College 3-1 in away game

The Biola women’s soccer team brought home a 3-1 win over the Whittier College Poets on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Following that on Saturday, Sept. 10 was a 2-0 loss to Pomona-Pitzer College.

Just 10 minutes into the game, Whittier was successful in scoring a goal past senior goalkeeper Erin Frushon. However, after the first half came to an end with the Poets holding onto a 1-0 lead, the Eagles were ready for an attack to bring them back in the match.

Junior midfielder Stephanie Cubias assisted Jessica Austin with a goal to tie the game. Cubias made a pass, allowing the ball to find Austin running past Whittier’s defense. This gave Austin the opportunity to go head-to-head with Whittier’s goalie and put one into the net in the 67th minute.

Soon after, freshman defender Michelle Clark put the ball in the air to allow Cubias a header in the net. With Biola up two goals to one, the Eagles had the momentum for one more goal from Austin.

With four minutes left in the game, Austin received a pass from sophomore Victoria Dalla Zanna. She was able to control, turn and shoot the ball once again into the lower corner of Whittier’s net.

Throughout the game there were many shots on goal against Frushon, but she stayed strong allowing no more to go in. The women dominated the game and kept their spirits up to take a 3-1 win home.

When asked what led to the team’s success Austin said, “Our ability to fight back after being down and knowing we were the better team and not playing to our full potential led to the first goal. Then from there came another, then another.”

The Eagles fall to 2-4 on the season after being shutout by Pomona-Pitzer

In the game against Pomona-Pitzer, Biola was shut out 2-0. Pomona-Pitzer’s senior forward
Traci Lopez got two goals past Frushon in the first half of the game.

Pomona-Pitzer’s junior midfielder Allie Tao went for a shot but was blocked by Biola’s defense. She got the rebound and dribbled the ball on the left side of the field to soon make a pass that went towards the middle of the goal box which gave Lopez the opportunity to make a goal in the 12th minute.

Moments later, Tao and Lopez took the ball down the field where Tao went for a shot but it went slightly over the crossbar. Another opportunity for a shot on goal came when Lopez cut through Biola defenders and took a shot on Frushon, but was denied. In addition, sophomore defender Jordan Bryant went for a shot that Frushon barely tipped over the crossbar.

However, in the closing minutes of the first half, junior defender Claire Mueller made a cross from a corner kick which found Lopez’s head to make it into the net. This brought the score to 2-0 in favor of Pomona-Pitzer.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Biola’s junior forward Ashleigh Cooley received a long pass and went for a shot that was denied by Pomona-Pitzer’s goalie sophomore Emma Wolfarth who saved it near the right post.

In minute 71, Tao failed again at an attempt to score and Lopez went for the rebound but was not given the chance by Biola’s defense.

In this game Austin said, “The whole team didn’t play well together and no one had a great game. We lost our heads and let our emotions take control of the game. Its like our heads were somewhere else and no one stepped up to take control. That was just an overall bad game.”

Pomona-Pitzer dominated the first half of the game with 11 shots on goal to a disappointing two by Biola, then in the second half Biola was outshot 16-7.

Before the Golden State Athletic Conference season begins, the Eagles have one more preseason game against Marymount College, Tuesday Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at Biola where Austin claims she is, “Looking forward to a win!”
