Biola Tennis had another rough day Friday April 8 against rival Azusa Pacific. The match was held in Azusa, and both the men and women lost 9-0. The APU women’s team is ranked 5th overall in the NAIA, and the men are ranked 4th overall.

Biola men’s team missing key players

The Biola men’s team did not get off to a great start, as they were missing two of their top four athletes, one being junior Weston Leopold, who normally faces the opponent’s top players. During the match against Concordia University, Leopold hit a ball against the fence in frustration. According to Biola men’s tennis coach Jim Emerson, His actions were deemed unacceptable, and Leopold was benched because of it. Senior Daniel Westman also missed the APU match because he was interviewing for a scholarship in Chicago.

In one particular doubles match, things looked bright for Biola when they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. The Cougars, however, regained their composure, dominating the rest of the match which finished 8-4. Junior Brent Worthington played the best match of the day, losing his sets 6-1 and then fighting harder in the second, only losing 6-4.

Losing streak continues for Biola women’s team

With the defeat, the Biola women have now lost seven matches in a row at 9-0. They are continuing to approach the matches well, however, and prove they can humbly take defeat.

Games coming up

The Biola women are back in action Saturday April 10 at 10:30 a.m. against The Master’s College. The men and women will also be back on the courts Tuesday April 12 at 2:00 p.m. in Fullerton against Hope International.
