Associated Students senators for 2011-2012 were decided Tuesday, March 29. While many dorms had just one candidate, a handful showed surprising initiative. Sigma and South Horton both had two candidates. Hart Hall had three candidates vying for the position.
The Sigma race was decided by one vote, displaying the competitive nature of the few multi-candidate races. This is the first year that Sigma has only one senator instead of two. The change comes as a result of the recent restructure by AS, resulting in scaling back Sigma senators, and allotting three senators to commuters. The student-senator ratio is typically 300 to one.
According to the AS website, senators’ roles include determining how to spend the budget, informing and representing their constituents. Vice president-elect Janine Marderian will preside over next year’s senate, drawing on experience from her current position as Sigma senator.
The Alpha East position is still vacant, leaving one spot open in the senate. See senate results below.
