Although it is normally a tranquil sport, two of Biola’s top A League Intramural softball teams will meet Saturday in what is sure to be an exciting matchup. The Shooting Star Dolphins and the Dark Knights, two of three teams with 2-0 records, meet at 12:30 p.m. in a possible preview of the A League Championship.
The Dark Knights have won with defense, barely pulling out a one-run win in the first week of the season before soundly defeating the Torrey Bulldogs last weekend. On the other hand, the Dolphins have utilized their offense averaging 22.5 runs per game.
However, that number may be a little deceiving, as both of the Dolphins wins have come against currently winless teams.
“These are two of the better teams,” Cory Langner, the AS member in charge of softball, said. “I think it will be really close. If the Dolphins are able to get their whole team there, they have a pretty good chance of winning.”
On the hardwood, basketball is in swing with four different leagues including two B League divisions.
Samurai ’08 sits atop of basketball’s A League with a 3-0 record. Former Biola athletes Paul Guerrero, Caleb Sulham and Kevin Cook lead the early favorites to win the championship.
The B League boasts six undefeated teams through three weeks of play. The Buckskins of the Western Division is one of the more familiar teams at the top of the standings. The Buckskins have kept a core group of players from the Hart dorm, including Senator Francisco Becerra and Laurence Blocker.
In the women’s division for basketball, Acid Rain is the only undefeated team left standing. After making it to the Championship last season, Acid Rain made few changes to their all-sophomore roster led by Captain Emily Jackson. The sophomores stand 4-0 after a win Tuesday night.
On the soccer field, Huma Huma, Bush FC and Tequila Mockingbird FC all sit tied in first place at 2-0. West Ham United sits a half game back due to a bye, but has the highest goal differential at plus five.
While still early, many teams are already emerging as potential threats to those currently undefeated. The West Ham captain also happens to be the AS member in charge of soccer, Patrick McDonald.
“Although the season got off to a slow start with the rain out, we’ve already had many intense games with many good teams emerging,” he said.
