Junior Weston Leopold prepares to serve the ball at the home match against the Whittier College poets Feb. 12. ADAM LORONA/ The Chimes
Biola Men’s Tennis faced off against the Whittier College Poets Saturday, but was unable to follow up on their nine match sweep at Cal Tech Friday. In a 3 doubles and 6 singles match, Whittier came out quickly, taking all three of the doubles matches, and eventually winning 7-2 overall. Although things looked grim early on, the Eagles stayed motivated, hoping to reverse their performance after their slow start.
Once the singles matches began, the Whittier College Poets kept their effort up and continued to execute. Although the Biola players continued to work to stave off a crushing defeat, Whittier was ultimately too much to handle.
Junior Weston Leopold managed to win his first set of his matches before embarking on an intense battle with Whittier sophomore Julian Seneviratne As the match progressed, hostility rose with subtle remarks bouncing back between Whittier’s coach and the two players.
Leopold finally silenced his opponents winning his second set grabbing Biola’s first win of the day. Biola continued to fight, with sophomore David Mossman persevering through his match taking the second set and winning in a decisive third set.
The Eagles hope to bounce back Wednesday against Vanguard in a conference matchup.
