Saturday afternoon, Biola played a great match on their own turf against Cal State San Marcos. While the Eagles outshot the Cougars 14-12, the game ended as 1-1 tie.

The game started out very physical with several color cards and minimal chances to score. Tension built higher when Biola senior Kennedy Chongo received a questionable red card in the 31 minute, causing the Eagles to be undermanned for the remaining 60 minutes.

However, the Eagles stood their ground and scored in the 48 minute. The goal was scored freshman Dylan Wingrove, and assisted by junior Marco Ruvalcaba. This gave Biola an early lead in the second half.

But determined to stop any more attempts, Cougar keeper Kevin Ernst made two great saves late in the match, adding to his seven saves of the game. With 40 seconds left in the game, the Cougars tied it up with a header by Alex Rodriguez off a throw-in.

In overtime, the Cougars outshot Biola 5-4. However, neither team could find the net. The tie gives the Eagles a 1-4-1 record.

Though this game wasn’t a win, the team continues to improve. The Eagle defense was consistently strong, only allowing the Cougars to take four shots on goal. The offense is putting more pressure on their opponents’ nets. So far throughout the season, many of the players have have risen to the occasion. Senior Phillip Frieze played a a great game against UCR, making over half of Biola’s shots. Senior Jacob Ravenscraft and freshman Daniel Chew led the team to victory against Whittier. And now freshman Dylan Wingrove is showing himself as a competitor, scoring despite his team lacking a player.

Before the Eagles start their conference schedule, they return home to face the Marymount College Mariners Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
