Biola volleyball upsets No. 2 Concordia

Biola’s volleyball team beat No. 2 Concordia, but lost against Fresno Pacific this week.

Biola pulled off a huge upset on Saturday, Sept. 11, as they defeated the No. 2 Concordia Eagles on the road 17-25, 25-22, 26-24, 23-25, 15-13. After a poorly played first set, Biola took the next two sets with big late-set kills by senior captain Abbie Wright and sophomore Christine Douglas in the second set and freshman Rachel Buckley in the third. Concordia took the fourth set after gaining momentum from their home crowd of 500 fans, but Concordia’s errors in the fifth set, and a timely kill by junior Kim Russell, sealed Biola’s victory. Freshman Tori Carroll made a team-high 12 kills, with Nicolette Mather adding 11 of her own. Douglas notched 11 kills and 10 digs. Wright led the setters with 23 assists, 13 digs and two kills. Russell contributed 10 kills and 10 digs.

Tuesday evening (Sept. 13) found the Eagles squaring off against the No. 1 Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds in front of a boisterous crowd in Chase Gymnasium. Though Biola was able to come back and win the third set, the Eagles fell to Fresno 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20 in four sets. Douglas led the Eagles with 11 kills, and Tavea Hampton added seven kills and five blocks. Biola is now 9-4 in the season and 2-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference matches. The Eagles will travel to The Master’s College on Saturday to face the Mustangs.
