Men’s soccer rakes in first goals and win of the season

The Eagles celebrated their first win with a 2-0 victory over the Whittier Poets Saturday.

The intensity started quickly as Whittier College’s DJ Covarrubias took the game’s first shot within the first minute Saturday on his team’s home turf, Graham Soccer Field. But after two consecutive losses and no goals scored this season, Biola was determined to put a “W” on their record, and they succeeded, winning 2-0 over the Whittier Poets.

Biola keeper Aaron Fenlason was rock solid, stopping all six of Whittier’s shots on goal. And after Biola’s defense stood strong against Whittier’s attempts, the Eagle offense took its turn hammering its opponent’s goal. In the 20th minute senior Jacob Ravenscraft, assisted by freshman Kevin Kiser, scored the first Eagle goal of the season. Biola made three more attempts before halftime, but came up just short.

Energized and ready, both teams played a heavy offensive game in the second half. Whittier took 10 shots to Biola’s nine. But it was freshman Daniel Chew, assisted by Ravenscraft, who gave Biola their second goal. With several minutes left in the game, Biola made three more attempts, but was stopped by Whittier keeper David Diaz.

With a win and two goals under their belt, Biola men’s soccer has gained some momentum for the season which continues Wednesday night at Claremont McKenna College.
