Biolans hit the ice Friday night, Dec. 7, as A.S.’s Social Board put on an Elf-themed night of ice skating at Norwalk Ice Arena.
Social Board staff estimated over 200 people attended the event, several of whom dressed to the theme, wearing elf costumes or hats that looked like animals from the movie Elf.
So many people attended the event that the arena ran out of several skate sizes. This didn’t stop Biolans from enjoying themselves, though. Many just walked onto the ice in their shoes, throwing snowballs at skaters, or doing a bit of ice dancing.
The arena is used to big groups, according to manager Rob Joyce, but isn’t used to seeing people having fun without skates.
“There’s still people going around in circles without shoes on,” he said, looking at the busy ice rink. “And everyone seems to be in a good mood.”
Social Board staff members, who have run ice skating events in the past, said they strategically place it around finals week.
“It gives students an opportunity to get away from the school work to have fun,” said Lindsey Minerva, social board volunteer.
Plus, she added, it just fits the theme of winter: “It’s festive, it’s wintery.”
Julian Francolino, freshman, said he enjoyed the event and took the opportunity Social Board gave him to put aside studying for finals.
Regarding the best crash of the night, several people described speed skating men falling and crashing into girls.
“It’s always funny when someone who falls causes another to crash,” said Lauryn Caldwill, Social Board’s Eddy coordinator.
Despite the crashes, only one minor ankle injury occurred.
Aside from skating, students could also enjoy hot chocolate, chips and cookies in the ice arena’s party room.
